for Every Dish

From appetizer to dessert – the right tableware makes all the difference.
Not all ceramic tableware is created equal. Shape, depth, and size influence how a dish is presented – and whether it stays warm on the table. Töpferkunst provides a practical overview of which tableware is best suited for which dish.
The great thing about Töpferkunst stoneware is its versatility; a well-assembled set covers all situations – from a quick breakfast to family meals and dinner parties.
The right tableware turns a good meal into a beautiful experience – and an everyday meal into a small ritual.
Which tableware is suitable for soups and stews?
For liquid and semi-liquid dishes, deep bowls are the best choice. They retain heat longer and prevent soups from spilling over. The thick-walled structure of stoneware makes all the difference: the material stores heat and releases it slowly – so the soup stays enjoyably warm longer.
Deep bowls with 6–8 cm depth and 400–600 ml capacity. Shallower soup plates are suitable for creamy soups with toppings. For Asian noodle soups: deep, tall bowls with a narrower diameter. Töpferkunst bowls are available in all collections and fit every soup style.
Deep stoneware bowls keep soups significantly warmer than thin porcelain bowls.
Which plates are suitable for main courses and pasta?
For main courses: enough space for attractive presentation, without the plate looking empty. 26–28 cm diameter is the standard used in gastronomy and upscale households. A slight rim frames the dish and prevents sauces from running over the edge.
| Dish | Recommended Shape | Ideal Size | Why? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pasta / Risotto | Wide, deep plate | 26–28 cm ⌀ | Space for expansive arrangement, rim holds sauce |
| Meat dish / Roast | Large flat plate | 28–30 cm ⌀ | Area for dish + sides |
| Salad / Appetizer | Medium bowl | 20–22 cm ⌀ | Holds dressing, slight indentation |
| Soup | Deep bowl | 400–600 ml | Heat retention, no spilling |
| Dessert | Small plate / bowl | 18–20 cm ⌀ | Frames without overwhelming |
| Breakfast / Muesli | Deep muesli bowl | 300–400 ml | Compact, versatile, stackable |
What do I need for a complete dinnerware set?
A complete dinnerware set for two people should include the following pieces. If you want additional pieces for guests, double or triple the quantity accordingly.
- 2× Dinner plates (26–28 cm): Base for main courses and pasta
- 2× Soup plates or bowls: for warm dishes and salads
- 2× Dessert plates or bowls: for desserts, breakfast, snacks
- 2× Muesli bowls: versatile – breakfast, soup, side dishes
- 2× Cups: coffee, tea, cappuccino
Töpferkunst dinnerware sets are available in various combinations. Check out our Dinnerware Sets Collection or assemble an individual set – all Töpferkunst pieces from a collection harmonize with each other, although each piece is unique due to the reactive glaze.
Large plate for main courses, deep bowls for breakfast and soups – Töpferkunst has both.

Questions
For soups and stews, deep stoneware bowls are best. The thick-walled structure retains heat longer than flat plates – the soup stays enjoyably warm on the table. Recommended: bowls with at least 6–8 cm depth and a capacity of 400–600 ml. Töpferkunst offers suitable bowls in all collections.
For main courses with sides, plates with a diameter of 26–28 cm are recommended. They offer enough space for attractive presentation without appearing oversized. Flatter plates with a slight rim are ideal – the rim frames the dish without wasting space.
High-quality stoneware is oven safe up to approx. 220 °C. Important: Never place a cold piece directly into a hot oven – the temperature shock can cause cracks. First bring the piece to room temperature, then heat slowly. Töpferkunst tableware is microwave, dishwasher, and oven safe.
For two people, an 8-piece set is ideal: 2 dinner plates, 2 soup plates or bowls, 2 dessert plates, and 2 muesli bowls. For families of 4, double that amount accordingly. Töpferkunst offers sets in various sizes – from compact 2-piece sets to complete dinner services.
