01

Materials & Quality

Stoneware is a ceramic material group that is fired at over 1,200 °C. This high-temperature firing fuses clay and glaze at a molecular level – the result is a dense, waterproof, and extraordinarily robust material.

Unlike industrially manufactured dinnerware, stoneware contains natural minerals such as iron oxide and feldspar, which give it weight, earthiness, and its distinctive character. No chipping, no fading – the glaze is part of the piece, not a layer on top.

Porcelain is fired from pure kaolin at 1,250–1,450 °C. It is white, translucent, and thin-walled – the classic for elegant table settings. Due to its purity, porcelain is particularly smooth and light.

Stoneware, on the other hand, contains natural minerals, is thicker, heavier, and more colorful. It appears warmer and more rustic – ideal for everyday use and conscious enjoyment. Both materials have their strengths, and both are available at Töpferkunst – depending on the collection and desired style.

Reactive glaze is a ceramic glaze that undergoes chemical reactions with the clay and kiln atmosphere during firing at over 1,200 °C. The resulting patterns – flow marks, color gradients, organic textures – are not reproducible.

Each piece is therefore a true one-of-a-kind. The fact that two plates from the same collection look different is not a defect – it is the hallmark of genuine craftsmanship.

Yes – completely. High-fired stoneware is dishwasher safe at temperatures up to 65 °C. Due to the high-temperature firing, the glaze is insolubly bonded to the body – there is no coating that could peel off.

Tip: Do not allow the bottom to rub against other ceramic pieces to avoid scratches.

Yes, completely. No metal, no gold decor – no risks in the microwave. Our dinnerware is suitable for daily microwave use.

Yes. All glazes at Töpferkunst are food-safe and tested for harmful substances. The high-temperature firing at over 1,200 °C ensures that glaze and clay are insolubly bonded – no harmful substances can transfer to food.

This is intentional and a mark of quality. The reactive glaze reacts individually to the clay, firing atmosphere, and position in the kiln during firing. No craftsman can fully control this process.

These variations are not a defect – they are proof of genuine craftsmanship. Each piece is unique.

  • First Use: Rinse briefly with warm water – removes any dust residue from transport.
  • Dishwasher: Suitable up to 65 °C. Do not let the bottom rub against other ceramics.
  • Microwave: Fully suitable.
  • Oven: Not recommended – our dinnerware is not oven-safe.
  • Coasters: Felt glides on the bottom protect delicate table and shelf surfaces.
  • Patina: Over time, stoneware develops a natural patina – a sign of use and part of the piece's history.
