Ceramic Mugs

What makes a good ceramic mug?

Ceramic mugs are fired, glazed drinking vessels with a handle that keep heat well, sit comfortably in the hand and are made for everyday use.

Whether you want a ceramic mug for your morning coffee or a stoneware cup for afternoon tea, what matters is capacity, wall thickness and shape. On this page you'll find 15 models, 14 of which are available to ship right away.

Warm Glazes

Reactive glazes show slight differences from piece to piece. That's craftsmanship, not a flaw.

Which mug suits which coffee?

The right size depends on the drink: espresso calls for a small, thick-walled cup, coffee and cappuccino need more room, and tea can be generously sized.

These figures are a guide. A mug filled almost to the brim cools faster and is harder to carry, so leave a little room at the top.

Drink Suitable capacity What to look for
Espresso approx. 60–100 ml Thick walls that hold the heat
Coffee approx. 200–300 ml Comfortable handle, stable base
Cappuccino approx. 150–200 ml Wide opening for the milk foam
Tea approx. 250–400 ml Generous capacity, room for the tea bag

“A mug is right when you enjoy picking it up in the morning.”

Cup or mug: what's the difference?

A cup has a handle, is usually slimmer and is often used with a saucer; a mug is larger, more compact and stands happily on the table on its own.

Mugs suit everyday life and the desk, because they don't need a saucer and hold more. Cups feel more understated and are ideal for espresso or a coffee at a laid table. In this selection you'll find both, for example the Nova coffee mug, the Purist coffee mug and the Riviera coffee cups.

  • Handle: A handle with room for at least two fingers sits securely in the hand.
  • Rim: A slim rim feels lighter at the lips, while a thicker one feels sturdier.
  • Base: A wide foot stops wobbling, especially on tall mugs.
  • Stackability: Uniform mugs stack neatly and save space in the cupboard.

How do you put together your own coffee set?

A coffee set comes together when you combine cups and small plates from one collection, so that colour, glaze and shape match.

You don't have to buy everything at once. Start with the cups you like and add dessert plates or bowls in the same glaze later. You'll find ready-made combinations in the cup sets. For the coffee itself, take a look at the coffee cups.

01
Choose a series

Pick a glaze and shape that go with your tableware.

02
Decide on quantity

Count on one cup per person, plus one or two spares for guests.

03
Add small plates

Dessert plates from the same collection turn cups into a harmonious set.

Stoneware or porcelain: which is better for mugs?

A stoneware mug keeps heat for longer and feels soft to the touch, while porcelain is thinner-walled, brighter and has a clearer ring; both work well for everyday use.

Earthenware is denser than terracotta and often carries warm, reactive glazes. Stoneware is fired at a higher temperature and is very robust, often with a matt finish. Porcelain looks classic and refined. If you drink tea, you might appreciate the warmth of earthenware; for espresso, a thin porcelain cup. You'll find more shapes in the tea cups and the espresso cups.

The key points at a glance

Choose the capacity to suit the drink, the handle to suit your hand and the material to suit the feel you like. Earthenware is warm and soft, porcelain fine and bright. All the mugs and cups in this selection are dishwasher safe.

How do you care for ceramic mugs properly?

The best way to care for ceramic mugs is with warm water and a mild washing-up liquid, or in the dishwasher; just avoid sudden temperature shocks and hard knocks.

Don't run hot mugs straight under cold water. Tea stains usually come off with a little bicarbonate of soda and warm water. Small differences in the glaze are part of the craft and don't change for the worse with use. Any exceptions for the microwave are noted on the relevant product page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a ceramic mug?

A ceramic mug is a fired, glazed drinking vessel made of clay, such as earthenware, stoneware or porcelain. It keeps heat well, doesn't affect the taste of your drink and suits coffee, tea and espresso. The glaze makes it watertight and easy to clean.

What size should a coffee mug be?

For filter coffee, around 200 to 300 millilitres is usual, for cappuccino 150 to 200, and for espresso 60 to 100. If you like to drink generously, go for a mug. Leave a little space below the rim when you pour.

Are stoneware mugs dishwasher safe?

Yes, all the mugs and cups in this selection are dishwasher safe. You can also use almost all of them in the microwave. Individual exceptions are noted on the relevant product page, so it's worth a quick look before you buy.

How do I put together a coffee set?

Choose a series with a glaze you like and combine cups with small plates from the same collection. That way the set looks cohesive. You can start small and add pieces later when more guests come.

Are handmade mugs always identical?

No, with handmade ceramics the glaze flow, colour tone and shape differ slightly from piece to piece. That isn't a flaw; it makes every mug unique. Reactive glazes in particular look lively and special because of it.

Does a cup work with your tableware without a saucer?

Yes, many cups and mugs look great on their own on the table. If you match the colour and glaze to your tableware, everything looks harmonious. A saucer isn't a must; it's a matter of occasion and personal taste.
